Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announced the first high-resolution, industrial-quality, indirect time-of-flight (iToF) module for 3D depth measurement and vision systems. The new ADTF3175 module enables cameras and sensors to perceive 3D space at one-megapixel resolution, providing iToF technology with an accuracy of up to +/-3mm for machine vision applications such as industrial automation, logistics, healthcare and augmented reality.

The ADTF3175 provides designers with a scalable, well-designed and calibrated depth-of-field system that can be integrated into 3D inspection and vision systems without the need to design specialized optics or solve electromechanical integration challenges, thereby simplifying the complex sensor design process by simplifying the Faster time to market. Designed for operation in a variety of environmental settings, this robust, high-resolution module utilizes Lumentum Operations LLC's advanced triple-junction Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology to enable detection in a wide range of lighting conditions. Lumentum Operations LLC is a leading provider of VCSEL arrays for Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and 3D inspection applications.

Téa Williams, senior vice president and general manager of 3D inspection at Lumentum, said: “We are delighted to partner with Analog Devices to provide solutions for the industry’s most demanding, high-resolution 3D inspection applications, from extended reality to robotics, Industrial applications such as smart buildings and logistics systems. Our 10W VCSEL arrays enable Analog Devices to enable more capable inspection and vision systems that can operate in a variety of lighting conditions, thereby removing environmental barriers and enabling broader, faster Machine Vision Deployment."

The ADTF3175 features an IR illumination source with optics, laser diode and driver, and a receiver path with lens and optical bandpass filter. The module also contains flash memory for calibration and firmware storage, and a power regulator for generating the local supply voltage. The modules are preset with a variety of operating modes, optimized for long and short distances.

Tony Zarola, senior director of ToF at Analog Devices, said: “Machine vision needs to take a leap forward to perceive smaller, more subtle objects faster in industrial environments that are often filled with harsh conditions and multiple distractions. The exceptional resolution of the ADTF3175 and precision enable vision and inspection systems, including industrial robots, to better understand the space they are in, and ultimately increase productivity to take on tasks that require higher precision. The introduction of this module helps fill a large gaps and accelerate the deployment of next-generation automation solutions and critical logistics systems.”

The ADTF3175 module will ship with an open source reference design for implementing the entire system, all required drivers, and ADI's complex depth-of-field processing capabilities available. Analog Devices also provides guidance on how to achieve Class 1 eye safety certification for the final product.
