Diodes Incorporated has released the PI3A6386 USB Type-C multimedia port switch, which was created to enable manufacturers to continue supporting traditional data and analog peripherals through USB Type-C ports. With the use of USB Type-C ports in phones and tablets, manufacturers are phasing out other ports, such as USB 2.0 and 3.5mm audio sockets. The port switch allows legacy data and audio signals to be transmitted through the USB Type-C port, enabling consumers to continue using their existing peripherals. The performance of the port switch ensures high-quality audio without signal distortion or noise. It integrates an autonomous microphone and a ground switch, while its CMOS design provides only 1 Ohm of on-resistance for the audio switching transistor. Low crosstalk between the data and audio channels is also a design priority for this switch, and has been successful with crosstalk suppression of -85dB at 30kHz. Other design highlights include programmable soft-start and soft-stop times, eliminating pops and clicks that audio signals may encounter when performing DC coupling. This provides a distortion-free audio experience. The switch operates from a 1.7V to 5.5V power supply, making it ideal for portable equipment. It can also process 3V signals, which further improves dynamic range and audio quality. The switch supports USB 2.0 high-speed and full-speed signals and USB Type-C audio accessory mode. -110dB THD keeps 2.0V RMS signal into 32 load in the range of 20Hz to 20kHz. Separate ground switches are also used for audio and data signals to further reduce crosstalk.
