Intersil introduces ISL94203 3 to 8-cell battery pack monitors to support lithium-ion batteries (Li-ion) and other batteries used in medical mobile carts, wheelchairs, electric bicycles, hand-held power tools, vacuum cleaners, and solar or renewable energy sources Chemical substance energy storage system. The device can accurately monitor, protect and balance rechargeable battery packs to maximize battery life and ensure safe charging and system operation.
OEMs no longer use NiCd and lead-acid batteries, but instead use more environmentally friendly lithium-ion battery chemicals. Lithium-ion batteries are smaller, lighter, and have a longer life, but they need to be monitored and protected for safe use. The ISL94203 can be used as a stand-alone battery management system for rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs. Its internal state machine has five pre-programmed stages that precisely control each battery of the battery pack to extend its life. The ISL94203 integrates a high-end charge / discharge FET drive circuit, allowing customers to safely reference the battery pack to their design.
The ISL94203 includes several programmable protection and monitoring functions to protect the battery pack from catastrophic events, such as short-circuit conditions and short-to-battery voltages. It has an open circuit check function to ensure that the IC is firmly connected to the battery pack. The device also has a special protection function that blows a fuse in the event of a catastrophic failure, rendering the battery pack unusable. The company said that in addition to providing diagnostic information, the ISL94203 can withstand hot-plug events of the battery pack and support a variety of lithium-ion chemicals.
