Linear Technology has introduced a new 1A, 100V input capability, synchronous step-down switching regulator LT8631. Synchronous rectification provides up to 90% efficiency, while burst mode operation keeps quiescent current below 7µA in no-load standby conditions. The device's 3V to 100V input voltage range makes it ideal for 48V automotive systems, dual battery transportation, industrial, and 36V to 72V telecommunications applications. Its internal high-efficiency switch can provide continuous output current up to 1A and voltage as low as 0.8V. The LT8631's burst mode operation provides ultra-low quiescent current, making it ideal for applications such as automotive "always-on" systems that require extended operating battery life. The LT8631's novel design maintains the lowest dropout voltage, enabling it to operate with duty cycles up to 99%. Its resistor-programmable frequency range of 100kHz to 1MHz and synchronization enable optimization between efficiency and external component size. The LT8631's 20-lead TSSOP package has a high-voltage lead pitch, which ensures a compact, low-thermal footprint and is suitable for high-voltage applications. The LT8631 utilizes internal top and bottom efficient power switches to integrate the necessary boost diodes, oscillators, control and logic circuits into a single die. Low-ripple burst mode operation maintains high efficiency at low output currents while maintaining output ripple below 10mVP-P. Special design techniques achieve high efficiency over a wide input voltage range, and the LT8631's current-mode topology achieves fast transient response and excellent loop stability. Other features include strong short circuit protection, power good flag, output voltage tracking and thermal protection. The LT8631EFE is available in a thermally enhanced TSSOP-20 package. The industrial temperature version LT8631IFE is tested and guaranteed to operate over a -40C to 125C operating junction temperature range. The company said that the high-temperature version, the LT8631HFE, has been tested and "guaranteed" to operate over a -40C to 150C operating junction temperature range.
