Microchip – MOST technology increasingly popular in vehicle infotainment networks

Microchip has announced that the BMW Group will continue to use Microchip's Intelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) to expand the popularity of MOST technology in its in-vehicle infotainment network. The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is the latest mass-produced car with MOST technology after BMW began extensive deployment in its premium models in 2001. To date, more than 150 million MOST devices have been installed in more than 180 car models since 2001. BMW and many other automakers have been choosing this technology for infotainment networks because it provides audio, packet / Internet protocol (IP) and control data, has zero processor overhead, and has proven electromagnetic compatibility ( EMC) behavior. In addition, MOST technology provides dedicated channels for this data through dedicated, application-specific hardware interfaces to simplify communication system design. For drivers and their passengers, MOST technology provides ultra-fast startup for immediate access to their multimedia systems. The MOST collaboration standard enables automotive OEMs and their tier 1 suppliers to use proven and reliable methods to define and implement their infotainment systems, including standard physical layers and reliable methods for system management and control, with outstanding reliability and quality of service ( QoS). The company says that using MOST technology can also reduce weight and make it easier to comply with environmental regulations. "We are delighted that BMW has once again adopted MOST technology in its new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer," said Ganesh Moorthy, chief operating officer of Microchip. "This is another example of MOST technology migrating from high-end car models to batch car models to reliably distribute data within vehicles."
