The BQ25150 of Texas Instruments is a highly integrated battery charging management IC, integrating common functions of wearable devices, including charger, output voltage rail, ADC for battery and system monitoring, and button controller. The device integrates advanced power path management and control, allowing the device to power the system while charging, even if the adapter is poor.

The host can control the power path through I (2) C, allowing it to disconnect input adapters and/or batteries without actually removing them. Single button input eliminates the need for a single button controller IC, reducing the total solution footprint. The button input can be used for the wake function or to reset the system. The 12 bit active ADC enables accurate battery voltage monitoring and can be used to enable low I (Q) measurement to monitor battery health. It can also be used to measure the battery temperature using a thermistor connected to the TS pin and an external system signal through a pin.

Low quiescent current during operation and shutdown maximizes battery life. Input current limit, charging current, LDO output voltage and other parameters can be programmed through I (2) C interface, making BQ25150 a very flexible charging solution. Include a voltage based JEITA compatible (or standard hot/cold) battery pack thermistor monitoring input (TS) to monitor battery temperature and automatically change charging parameters to prevent battery charging from exceeding its safe temperature range. The temperature threshold is programmable via I (2) C, allowing the host to customize the thermal charging profile. The charger is optimized for 5V USB input and 20V absolute maximum withstand line transient. The equipment integrates a linear regulator to provide a quiet track for the radio or processor, which can be purchased independently and controlled through I (2) C.

BQ25150 IC integrates a linear charger, which can quickly and accurately charge small batteries. The device supports a maximum charging current of up to 500 mA and a termination current of up to 0.5 mA. The battery uses standard lithium ion charging configuration, including three stages of pre charging, constant current and constant voltage regulation.
